Epilogue - this aphasia

from Dogs and Daffodils by Samuel Hill

about

I wrote this in 2018–2019, as a reflection on my struggles with taking up songwriting more seriously (It’s ironic that it took me this long to finish it!). I think if I tried to make this album live up to my vision for what it could be, it would never be finished, so I’m releasing it in the hope that it can still touch people in its’ imperfection. My perfectionism can be crippling at times, so I’m hoping the act of finishing and then letting go of a project will be a beneficial experience overall.

lyrics

V1
I can't fathom where to begin
second guessing every line
You're a stranger, but from within
were you ever truly mine?

Sparks of brilliance which I can't recall
where they ever there at all?
You're elusive, but when you call
I can't run from your embrace

Ch1
You enchant me though I don't know your name
You're a mystery but I love you all the same
Can't erase you from my mind
So I fall back into you

V2
This aphasia touches only song
just can't seem to get it out
incompleteness that feels so wrong
am I drowning in my doubt?

You're a nightmare, but I love you so
will you ever let me go?
You're abusive, but when you call
I can't run from your embrace

Ch2
You enchant me though I don't know your name
You're a mystery but I love you all the same
Can't erase you from my mind
So I crawl back into you

Bridge
Plant the seed, and hope that it grows
as I strive to bring you home
are you in my reach, or are you gonna stay unknown?

Sleepless nights, searching for the light
can I make you come alive?
oh it's been so long, can I finally get you right?

V3
So I found you, you finally grew
you surpassed my disbelief
I complete you, so old but so new
time to go into the world

they may not love you, but you never know
the hearts that might be within reach
so I trust you, and let you go
now I don't have to fall back into you.
